Get Dancing in the Streets!

Let Me Play has recently done some research into dance and it seems that at the moment Dance is at an all time high in the UK with over 4.8 million people participating in community dance each year.  Some dance facts for you:

  • 30,000 is the number of people employed by the dance economy
  • 200 is the estimated number of dance companies in the UK
  • 20,000 is the number of people that go to the Move It! Dance exhibition in the UK.

Such is the popularity that research by the 'PE and School Sport Club links scheme' shows dance is second only to football as the most popular activity of school children. The number of pupils choosing dance has risen 83% in four years, according to research by the Arts Council.

Leading the pack in styles of dance is Street Dance and Cheerleading.  We’re seeing this clearly in the media with reality dance competitions So You Think You Can Dance, Got to Dance and Britain’s Got Talent riddled with Street Dance talent.   In January 2010, Got To Dance received 1.2 million viewers in the UK, the Britain’s Got Talent results show on Saturday 30 May, 2009 was the biggest-rating TV programme on any channel since England played in the Euro 2004 football tournament with 19.2 millions viewers. The winner was Diversity – a highly acclaimed Street Dance crew

Let Me Play are seeing a huge interest from schools for Cheerleading and Street Dance PPA Cover, After School and Lunchtime Clubs.  Amy Lalla, Director, says “Interest in Street Dance and Cheerleading is certainly very popular at the moment, we continually have schools requesting after-school clubs for these activities.  So much is the demand that we fully expect to sell out of our Street Dance Camp this year.  With Cheerleading creeping up in popularity we have just launched a residential Cheerleading Camp – with the buzz around this sport at the moment, we are really looking forward to a fantastic set of Summer Dance Camps!”
