i-Volunteer is launched thanks to the Vodaphone Foundation!

LOCAL CHARITY SPORTING EDUCATION RECEIVES START UP INVESTMENT FROM THE VODAFONE FOUNDATION TO SUPPORT WORK WITH YOUNG PEOPLE
Sporting Education has received a funding grant of £7,600 from the Vodafone Foundation to help establish a volunteering programme with young people in the Camden area. The new programme will reach eight community projects and involve 150 young people in Camden over the next 12 months. The much needed cash injection will help Sporting Education kick-start the i-Volunteer recruitment programme which aims to engage with young people in the local area and create a movement that will regenerate neighbourhoods and expand the minds and self-limitation of young people. Sporting Education was presented its cheque from the Vodafone Foundation this week during the first i-Volunteer programme which involved young people donating clothing to the Help the Aged store in Kentish Town and then revamping the store’s window.Camden is one of 25 retail regions that is being provided with grants by the Vodafone Foundation to give to the local charity of their choice. This is the third year the Vodafone Foundation has overseen such a scheme with last year’s theme of ‘unlocking potential in young people’ continuing in 2009. Since February, charities across North London have submitted requests for funding to their local Vodafone store. Grants were then considered by the Vodafone Foundation trustees to ensure donations would make a positive difference to the lives of young people in the area.Peter Marsh, Vodafone Regional Manager said: “I am delighted that we are able to contribute to Sporting Education and in turn the development of the i-Volunteer project to help young people in the area. It is inspiring to see just what Sporting Education can achieve locally. We all believe our contribution will help make a difference to young people in Camden.”For more information about the Vodafone Foundation visit: www.vodafonefoundation.org. For more information about i-Volunteer visit: www.i-volunteer.co.uk.                                        About The Vodafone FoundationThe Vodafone Foundation has invested over £100 million in projects since its creation in 2002 concentrating on disaster relief, helping disadvantaged young people via sport and music initiatives and specific projects across Vodafone's 24 local Foundations worldwide.About the i-Volunteer project. i-Volunteer is all about making change a reality. The project aims to engage with young people in a local area and create a movement that will regenerate neighbourhoods and expand the minds and self-limitation of young people. The project is about getting young people involved with their immediate area and showing them that they can make a meaningful and a visible improvement. The programme might involve revamping a care home, painting a community centre or transforming play areas. In exchange for donating their time, participants will get credits which will allow access to a range of benefits which will include sports coaching, qualifications, sightseeing, football tickets and theatre tickets.

The first session was a hit and 26 girls showed up to see what Jo Morris (Let Me Play's Cheerleading Coach) had to offer! The session started with a warm up before moving on to the basics of cheerleading...cartwheels and forward rolls. Many of the participants had never experienced Cheerleading before and loved every minute of it! Those with a little more experience were challenged with some hot new moves! The session ended with a short choreographed routine. It was very well received and Let Me Play expects an even bigger turnout at next week's session! If you are interested in having Let Me Play come and work in your school, please contact us on 0845 009 0933 for more information about our school programmes and PPA cover!
